Abstract

In this competitive world, numbers of activities and pressures for adolescents have increased remarkably. These increased pressures and activities put adjustment problems among adolescents. Self-efficacy can be a potent factor to enhance adjustment among adolescents. The present study was aimed at to see group differences (high vs. low) of self-efficacy with adjustment among adolescents. The objectives of the study are to examine the relationship between measures of adjustment and self efficacy. The sample of the study involved 194 adolescents between the age range of 14 and 16 years. The adolescents were assessed with Bell's Adjustment Inventory (Hindi Adaptation), and Self-efficacy Questionnaire. The data were analyzed by using Pearson's Product Moment method of correlation and t test. For mean comparisons, the sample of adolescents was classified into two extreme groups' i.e. high vs. low (Mean±1 S.D.) on the basis of their scores on self-efficacy and adjustment scores of their respective wards. The results showed that (i) Social adjustment, family adjustment and emotional adjustment was found to be significant negative association with self-efficacy. (ii). the two extreme groups of self-efficacy (high vs. low) showed significant differences on adjustment among adolescents.

Abstract

Adults and young adults underwent the phase of transition from dependency to independence with different attitudes towards life satisfaction, optimism and psychological distress in general. The present study was conducted with two objectives. First was to examine the relationship of life satisfaction, optimism, and psychological distress, second was to investigate the sex differences among all these variables. The sample of the study involved 200 post graduate students (100 males and 100 females) between the age ranges from 22 to 28 years. The subjects were assessed with Life Satisfaction Scale (Alam&Shrivastava), General Health Questionnaire (Goldberg) and Optimism Scale (Seligman). The data were analyzed by using Pearson's Product Moment method of correlation, t-test. The results revealed that (i) one of the measures of optimism (PMB) was found positively associated with psychological distress. (i) Male and female subjects differ significantly on psychological distress and on optimism (Permanent Bad).

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to examine the relationship between Attachment Style, Personality and Interpersonal Relations among Indian youth. The sample for the study comprised of 409 youth (205 male and 204 female). The age of the sample range from 17 to 20 years with mean age of 18 years. Attachment Style Questionnaire, 16 Personality Factors Questionnaire and Interpersonal Relationship Scale were administered. The main objectives of the study were to examine the relationship between Attachment Style, Personality and Interpersonal Relations and to find out the predictors of Interpersonal Relations.To meet the objectives of the study, the data was subjected to Pearson product moment correlation and multiple regression analysis. Results showed significant positive correlation between Attachment Style and Personality Factors, between Attachment Style and Interpersonal Relations and PersonaHty and Interpersonal Relations. Multiple regression analysis found three predictors of Interpersonal Relations. Two of the predictors, i.e. TP and AN are from PersonaHty and one i.e. CRTO from Attachment Style. The three predictors explain 15% of the total variance. It can be concluded that Attachment Style and Personality predicts Interpersonal Relations.

Abstract

Mental health of adolescents is a major concern area for psychologists. In order to find out different variables that contribute and predict mental health among adolescents, the present study was planned to examine the relationship between Mental Health, Emotional, Intelligence, Resilience and Temperament among Adolescents. Mental Health Battery (MHB), Multidimensional Measure of Emotional Intelligence (MMEI), Resilience Scale (RS) and The Formal Characteristics of Behavior-Temperament Inventory (FCB-TI) were employed on 400 adolescents within the age range of 15 to 19 years. The data was subjected to Pearson's Product Moment Method of correlation and Multiple Regression analysis. Results revealed that positive association exists between components of Mental Health and Emotional Intelligence. In the same way Resilience and Temperament correlates positively with Mental Health. Results also revealed that emotional intelligence, temperament, and resilience play important role in mental health of adolescents. Finding also revealed that emotional intelligence (motivating oneself, handling relationships, managing emotions), temperament (endurance, emotional re-activity) and resilience predict 30% variance (R2=.30)of mental health among adolescents.

Abstract

The main aim of this research was to investigate the differences between high and low sensation seeking alcoholics on their life satisfaction and adjustment problems. The study was carried out on adult alcoholics admitted in drug-de addiction center. The sample for the study was drawn using incidental sampling technique. The age range of the sample varies from 21 to 40 years. The participants were administered with Bell Adjustment Inventory (BAI) Hindi Adaptation, Life Satisfaction scale and Zuckerman's Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS). The data were subjected to Mean, Standard Deviation, t-test and Pearson Product Moment Method of correlation. The analysis of data confirmed significant difference between high and low sensation seeking alcoholics on their life satisfaction and adjustment problems. High sensation seeking alcoholic group had more adjustment problems and low life satisfaction as compare to low sensation seeking counterparts.

Abstract

The present study was designed to find out the relationship between parenting stress and problem behavior in children with intellectual disability among fathers of children with intellectual disability. Parenting Stress Index (Abidin, 1995) and Behavioral Assessment Scale for Indian Children With Mental Retardation (Peshawaria & Venkatesan, 1992) Part-B were completed by 225 fathers of children with intellectual disability. The mean age of father was 38.4 years and the mean age of children was 10.5 years. All the children selected are having IQ below 70. Problem behaviors show significant positive correlation with child domain of stress and parent domain of stress. This is clear indication that problem behaviors in children produce stress among fathers who are actively involved in care giving role.

Abstract

The main aim of the present investigation is to study Temperament and Forgiveness as predictor of Mental Health among adults. For achieving the objectives of present investigation, a representative sample of 300 adults has taken from different background. The selected subjects received The Heartland Forgiveness Scale (Thompson, 2005), The Forgiving Personality Scale (Kamat et al., 2006), Symptoms Check List-90-R (Dragotis et al., 1973) and Formal Characteristic of Behaviour-Temperament Inventory (Darolia & Kumar, 2003). The results of stepwise regression analysis shows that four predictor of forgiveness and temperament predict mental health among adults. These predictor are Endurance, Sensory Sensitivity, Forgiving Personality and Situational Forgiveness.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to find out the predictors of suicide ideation among adolescents. The study was carried out at on a sample of 124 male and 156 female adolescent with age ranging from 14 to 17 years and mean age of 15 years. The sample was drawn from various educational institutes of three districts of Haryana, i.e., Kurukshetra, Hissar, and Fathehabad. Beck scale for suicide ideation, Academic anxiety scale for children, Child depression inventory and Self-efficacy questionnaire were used to gather the data. To identify the role of academic anxiety, depression and self-efficacy in predicting suicide ideation stepwise multiple regression was applied. Results revealed that depression and academic self-efficacy as the two strongest predictors of suicide ideation accounting 16% of the variance. Findings are discussed in the light of previous studies and implications are discussed.

Abstract

Emotion regulation strategies and difficulties in regulating one's emotions have been implicated in the study of depression in the past. The present study aims to extend the existing literature on the link between depression and emotion regulation among adolescents. The objective was to assess the relationship between different emotion regulation strategies and depression. At the same time the study examined emotion regulation strategies as the predictors of depression. The study was conducted on a sample of 400 adolescents with age ranging from 13 to 18 years. Significant correlations were found between depression and eight out of nine cognitive strategies self blame, blaming others, rumination, catastrophizing, positive refocusing, positive reappraisal, acceptance, and refocus on planning. Similarly, a robust positive correlation was found between depression and difficulties in emotion regulation subscales (non acceptance, goals, impulse, strategies, & clarity). The findings of the present study supported the stated hypotheses. Limited access to emotion regulation strategies, self blame, catastrophizing, positive reappraisal, lack of emotional clarity and impulse control difficulties were found to be the potent predictors of depression.

Abstract

This study examined the role of maternal parent interactions with child in academic achievement of school students. The purpose of the study was to determine how maternal authoritative, permissive and authoritarian parenting styles as well as parent's child relationship influence the academic achievement of students at high school level. The main objective is to find out predictors of academic achievement among high school students. The total sample (400) for the study involved 200 mothers and 200 high school students between the age range of 14 and 16 years. The parents were assessed with Parent Child Relationships scale (PCR) and Parenting Authority Questionnaire (PAQ-R). Academic achievement score of the students were taken as the average percentage of marks obtained by the students in previous two years in their annual examination conducted by their respective boards/schools. The data were analyzed with the correlation and regression (stepwise). The results showed that (i) authoritarian and permissive parenting style and academic performance have negative correlations. (ii) Parent's child relationships like Acceptance and Realistic Role Expectation have significant positive relationship with academic achievement whereas Carelessness and Lenient Standards have negative relationships with academic achievement (iii). The stepwise regression analysis found four pertinent predictors of academic achievement among high school students, i.e., permissive parenting style, authoritative parenting style, parental acceptance and over protection of parents. All four predictors jointly explained 29.6% of total variance in dependent variable.
